Well, I had a blog on tumblr.com, but I didn't really think it was user friendly, so I thought I would jump over to Blogger (like many of my friends/family). I want to try and keep this up to date since Aaron and I are expecting our first child in a few months!
I found out on November 1 that I was expecting (via an at home pregnancy test). Aaron was not home when I took the test, so I had to sit and wait...and wait...and wait until he got home. When he finally did, I probably looked like I had seen a ghost while I was sitting on the couch. I had left the test in the bathroom and I told him I had to show him something when he walked into the living room. He thought our black lab Marley had destroyed something. But this time, he was wrong... I led him into the bathroom and he said that he kinda got a feeling what was coming next. When I showed him, he was just as shocked as I was. Then he told me to take another test. Well, I got the same result. :) Even though it came as quite the shock, it started to become pretty exciting after it settled in.
We were not able to get an appointment with the doctor until November 18. So we had to keep this HUGE news a secret for weeks! We did not tell anyone... well unless you count the DirectTV customer service rep and the cashier at Publix (more on this later)... because we wanted it to be confirmed by the doctor. Well, it was! The baby was 8 weeks when we went for the first time... so I was about 5 1/2 weeks when I first found out.
We were expecting Aaron's parents to come in town for Thanksgiving, so we were going to wait to tell our families together. But it turned out they came at Christmas instead, so we went ahead and told my parents the following Sunday (11/22). We always go over to their house to eat on Sundays. Usually Brad, Megan and the boys come too. But this Sunday they were doing something else. I tried and tried to get them to come, but no such luck. I told my mom I would bring dessert that day because I had planned to tell them through a cookie cake (this is where the cashier at Publix comes in). We ordered one that said "Baby J is on the Way 6/30/10."
Needless to say, my parents weren't really expecting to read that on the cake, but they were very excited to hear the news. Then we called my brother to tell him he missed out on a great dessert and we called Aaron's parents too.
We went back a few weeks later when I was 11 weeks.
We found out what our baby was on February 4... after taking a Gender Prediction test and looking at the Chinese Calendar, we were 99.9% sure we were having a boy. However, when we got to the doctor, we were told it was a GIRL!! It was quite unexpected to hear that, but we would have been happy either way.
After Aaron and I both composed some list of names and compared them, made changes, added, deleted, etc., we finally came to an agreement on our new baby girl's name. She will be named Kerrigan Grace Jordan. You ask, where does this name come from? No, it's not a family name. No, it's not after Nancy Kerrigan. I just thought of it one day and it really stuck out from day one. It took a bit of convincing on my part with Aaron, but after a few weeks, he really began to like it.
I went on March 5 for my sugar test and I FAILED! :( So I had to go back for THREE HOURS the following Monday (3/8) to drink the flat-Sunkist-tasting drink once more. My fasting level was within normal range. But after getting finger pricked three times after drinking the concoction, I failed 2 of the tests. So I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes... boooooo!! I had to see a dietitian to discuss a meal plan and to receive my glucose monitor. Now I have to really pay attention to carbs and sugars when eating. I thought you were supposed to be able to eat whatever you wanted during pregnancy??? Since I've started testing, I've only had a few high levels... so no more Milo's, corn dogs or dressing from Bates Turkey. I'm just hoping I won't have to be put on insulin or that Baby Kerrigan is a whopper. The "diet" really isn't that bad, but I have had a few times where I wanted to cry.
I go back to the doctor on April 5. I'm sure they will want to look at my sugar levels now that I have GD. Other than that, we'll listen for the heartbeat. I don't think I'll have another ultrasound. I'd really love to see that baby move though! She sure has been active these past couple of weeks. It's so surreal that there is a human-being growing inside of me! But it's really neat to be able to feel her flip flop all over the place in my belly.
I had a baby shower at school yesterday, so it's really starting to settle in that this is really happening! We got a lot of gift cards and other great gifts. It's exciting!
The UAB basketball season finally ended this past week, so Aaron is not going to be nearly as busy. So we were going to be beginning "Project Baby" this weekend! We have got so much work to do in our 2 spare bedrooms, closets, garage and attic. But at least we have some time so were are not overly rushed. Hopefully I will keep up with this blog and will keep the process updated, as well as post pictures of our progress.
Since I am on the verge of writing a novel, I will stop for now. I'm really going to try to keep this updated!
